History

Former Captain of the Port of Antwerp, Louis Roofthooft wanted in the mid 70 a place to install his private collection of animals. His choice is a site near the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen channel. In 1976, he settled in his private park in Olmen with his animals. Louis Roofthooft also owned a circus which he set the tent next to the area for daily performances. The success was not good from the opening, the circus did not attract any viewers. In addition, the artists also worked as zookeepers. Roofthooft died in the early 90s and the park was offered for sale. In 1995, the family acquires Verheyen park. With this purchase, the family can provide adequate shelter for their own private collection. The new owners understand the value of creating good living conditions for animals and working to improve the business to increase the number of entries. In 1995, the park attracts about 9,000 visitors. The existing infrastructure was reorganized in the early years. Animals receive more space in the form of islands and natural habitats, which is appreciated by the public. Gradually, the park evolves and grows to become a private zoo full twelve acres with over 200 species of animals. In addition, a children's farm, a playground, bouncy castles and trampolines complete the offer. Becourse of these investments the zoo has 200.000 visitors annualy. Since 2019 Olmense Zoo is called Pakawi Park
